Travel Through the Wormhole of HTML5 and C++ With MoSync

HTML5 may be the best thing since sliced bread, but some might argue it's not moving quite fast enough to keep up with the demands of the mobile market. APIs from W3C are slowly emerging, making it hard for pure HTML5 apps to take advantage of certain device functionality like high processor speeds, mobile cameras, accelerometers and even barometers. Meanwhile, clients and managers are bringing up HTML5 to developers, expecting them to get onboard, without fully understanding its limitations.

But MoSync, a small company from Sweden, has released the latest version of its open-source development environment, which it says combines the ease of development and UI slickness of HTML5 with the powerful capabilities of C++, giving developers the best of both worlds. Part of its latest (v2.7) release, it’s dubbed "Wormhole Technology", and offers several benefits for developers, while maintaining Mosync's core capability of enabling cross-platform development.

The main benefit is really...

App Design Patterns to Slim Down Data Usage, From Onavo’s “Magical Shrinking Machine”

Last year at our MWC WIPJam, Guy Rosen from Onavo was one of our featured developer storytellers, and it's been great to watch the success Onavo has had since then with their data-saving apps for iOS and Android. We're happy to be able to share a guest post from Onavo's Chief Architect, Yuval Ariav (cross-posted from the Onavo blog), with some tips on how developers can put their apps' data consumption on a diet for the benefit of end users. Take it away, Yuval!

Yuval Ariav is Chief Architect at Onavo, the mobile data savings experts, where he is in charge of setting the company's roadmap from a strategic perspective. You can follow Yuval on Twitter, his blog or LinkedIn profile.

During our work on the ‘Magical Shrinking Machine’ here at Onavo, we have come across hundreds of thousands of different iOS and Android apps and services. After studying these apps, we have identified a relatively small set of design patterns (or “network usage models“) on the apps’ side that drive...

The App Marketing Imperative: Don’t Count On App Stores To Advertise Your App

Sprint announced its "Place Your Ad" program this week, which will allow developers and publishers to bid on featured placement in its tab in the Android Market and its Sprint Zone app for its customers. This follows in the steps of other App Store providers like GetJar that use similar systems to sell their featured slots, but it also reinforces the need for developers to do their own marketing, rather than solely relying on app stores to do it for them.

This was a point that came up yesterday in the WIPJam at Apps World NYC, as Caroline mentioned in a tweet:

It's become clear over the past several months that the app store world is becoming more and more like the world of content decks in some ways from several years ago. Apps from big publishers are dominating the top-download charts, and once those apps get in the charts, they're hard to dislodge. When they do get knocked out, it's often by an app or game from another big publisher.

This used to happen because these...

Turing festival presentation

The slides of my talk at Turing Festival are available on slideshare!

Have a look!

[Disclaimer : this slide pack was prepared on a broken Mac! where only the browser was working! The entire presentation was thus prepared on sliderocket who saved my bum, by allowing me to import exisitng presentations (albeit in image format most of the time. The fact that I didn't have access to a file browser (they call it finder on a Mac) did not really help ... I still curse Apple to this day! But hope you enjoy the presentation. This is a long winded way to say that some of the slides look awful and I apologize for that... and I'm working on an official apology from Apple too :D ]

Components of a Successful App - Survey Open

I'm doing some research on all the components that go into making a successful app.  Is it a good idea?  Good planning.  Good market research?  Good marketing?  Practice?  Having investment?  Living in 'the valley'? or having a good luck charm?  My sense is a combination of the above, and a lot of hard work.

Help me out by completing this brief survey. Also - if you are interested in being a case study, please contact me directly (caroline at wipconnector dot com). Thanks!

Guest Post: Location Push Notifications Bring the Context Holy Grail Closer to Developers

Push notifications are part of the standard arsenal of developer tools for smartphone apps these days, and a key way to drive users back to apps and services. Urban Airship, one of the leading providers of push notifications (among other things!) recently teamed up with SimpleGeo to offer location-based pushed notifications. The company's VP of Growth, Dylan Boyd, stopped by to share more on the topic with us.

WIP: Hi, please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about what you do at Urban Airship.

DB: Hey! I’m Dylan Boyd and leading all the business development activities for The Ship. Which means I interact with developers, brand marketers, the big ISPs, etc. Also, we are based in Portland, which has a tech scene that is really starting to take off, and we’re hiring! Talk to us!

WIP: You had a big announcement last week in which you're working with SimpleGeo to enable location-based push notifications. We're familiar with push notifications, we're familiar with...
